BA Graphic & Digital Design

Clara Robson

A graphic designer who’s passionate about powerful yet playful design, with a keen interest in typography, print and branding. I love challenging ideas and perspectives, with design as my tool to do this, bringing a sense of humour, history and humanness to my work.

Abbess

In the 2026 degree show, I displayed a typeface called Abbess. An imperfect, contrary glyph kit for the imperfect, contrary feminist who needs to share a coded message.

I experimented with sharing iconography through this typeface format, and with representing the experience of womanhood through lettering. The letterforms are based on a blackletter typeface, and have been reimagined through pencil drawing, then translated into a digital typeface through Adobe Illustrator and Glyphs. The ‘medieval’ shapes underpinning the letterforms root the project’s anti gender essentialism ideas clearly in history, in generations of women; communicating, code-breaking, defying expectations and innovating since society begun.

The project is based on research into feminist movements and DIY printed material at the 56a Infoshop Radical Print Archive in London: I explored networks of information sharing, protest in different forms, and the act of making and disseminating in order to provoke change.

Design

The BA Graphic and Digital Design programme is rooted in experimentation across digital and analogue media, deep collaboration and a focused engagement with visual and material culture. We are a community of visual thinkers and makers, passionate about typography and language, narrative and storytelling, motion graphics and moving image, art direction, photography and image making. We understand design as broad and complex, multi-layered and detailed, crafted and accidental. Combining professional practice and creative research with technical skills, our programme develops curious students into designers of the future.
