Unit 7: Space of Endearment

unit description

A space of endearment is more than a physical location. It is a site, architectural or otherwise, held in deep regard – an environment that resonates emotionally, offering comfort, reflection, and serenity. Such spaces matter not for their material form but for the feelings and memories they evoke.

The lyric “a simple garden with acres of sky” by Yusuf Islam captures this idea beautifully. While land is divided into ownership, the sky remains boundless and shared. It reminds us that fulfilment lies not in possessions but in love, care, and connection – with one another, with nature, and with the places that allow us to dream.

Spaces of endearment, whether humble or grand, provide opportunities for reflection and calm. They ground us, reminding us of the power of simplicity in a culture that often values speed and complexity. A bench, field, street, or windowsill can become a place of return throughout the year.

Ultimately, architecture derives its greatest significance not from ownership or materiality, but from its capacity to connect people, place, memory, imagination, and our shared humanity.

The MArch Architecture is a two-year full-time or three-year part-time programme offering exemption from ARB/RIBA Part 2. It combines rigorous professional training with creative and speculative design exploration. In the first year, students join a themed design unit to undertake a creative building design project combined with a technical and professional report. In the second year, students pursue a comprehensive speculative architectural design project, and an in-depth theoretical thesis tailored to their personal interest. The programme fosters independent thinking, innovation, theoretical and technical excellence, preparing graduates for advanced architectural practice and ongoing professional development in a dynamic global context. See further details on our prospectus page.
