Teaching in histories & theories of architecture is designed as a developmental journey over the three years of the BA, through ideas, politics, art, buildings, and landscapes as products of complex contexts. This supports a process of gaining skills and knowledge through developing individual interests and identities through a critical assessment of the historical record and the constructed environments they encounter.
The Year 3 architecture dissertation (of which there are a sample of exemplars above) gives students the opportunity to develop their own research interests both as individuals and in small tightly guided groups overseen by a dedicated supervisor. Themes this year have focused on power, ecologies, everyday spaces, artefacts & representations. A high level of research quality and critical evaluation are expected, and textual and visual assessment is combined with visits to sites, libraries, & archives. The dissertations produced demonstrate the variety of interests and the developing independence of their authors; arresting in terms of their written and visual quality, as well as the connections made between case studies and pressing concerns in architectural histories and theories..
