BA Music and Sound Production

Performance Two

This performance explores the themes of feedback, malfunction, and sampling through a hybrid approach that combines live vocal performance, looping, and experimental sound manipulation. Drawing on influences from Neo-soul and contemporary experimental music, the work investigates how unstable technologies and unexpected sonic events can become creative tools rather than obstacles.

The objective was to create a performance that balanced emotional vocal expression with exploratory sound processes. Using a looper, layered vocal textures were built and transformed in real time, creating relationships between independent and interconnected musical elements. A key aspect of the process involved intentionally working with malfunction, including the controlled use of a “bad loop,” to challenge conventional ideas of perfection and highlight the creative potential of error.

Technically, the performance incorporated live vocals, looping techniques, and no-input mixer experimentation to generate evolving textures, feedback systems, and unpredictable sonic behaviours. These elements were carefully shaped into a structured performance that moved between soulful melodic passages and abstract soundscapes. Dynamic layering, textural development, and feedback manipulation were used to create tension, contrast, and progression throughout the piece.

I produced this work to explore the intersection of human expression and technological unpredictability. By combining the warmth and emotional depth of soul-inspired vocals with experimental sound practices, the performance reflects my interest in developing a distinctive artistic identity that is both culturally grounded and sonically adventurous. The work demonstrates how malfunction and feedback can be transformed into meaningful musical and performative experiences.
