BA Music and Sound Production

Performance One

This performance was an experimental multimedia piece that explored the interaction between spoken word, live sound manipulation, and unconventional musical materials. The work combined a malfunctioning piano, ambient soundscapes, typewriter sounds, DJ controller techniques, and vocal performance to create a layered and evolving sonic environment. The objective was to investigate how different technologies and sound sources can interact to communicate ideas and emotions through improvisation and contrast.

The creative process focused on balancing structured musical ideas with spontaneous performance decisions. Silence, pauses, and contrasting textures were used deliberately to shape the pacing and allow individual sounds and gestures to emerge with significance. Spoken word elements were integrated as both a narrative and musical device, while the technological components functioned as expressive tools rather than simply sources of sound.

Technically, the performance employed live audio manipulation, sampled soundscapes, amplification, and electronic mixing techniques alongside acoustic and mechanical sounds. Attention was given to creating shifts between foreground and background textures, with different sonic layers contributing to the overall atmosphere. The combination of traditional and non-traditional instruments reflected an interest in expanding the boundaries of performance practice.

This work was produced to explore originality, experimentation, and the relationship between human expression and technology. By combining improvisatory approaches with theatrical and sonic elements, the piece aimed to challenge expectations of musical performance while encouraging the audience to engage with sound, texture, and narrative in a more immersive and unconventional way.
