“It’s been a year since I died, and still nobody has found me.”
Based on a historical crime, the Red Barn Murders, Beth Flintoff’s play is set in 1820s Suffolk. The plot is determined by Maria’s death at the hands of her lover – but the story dignifies and celebrates her life: her persistence, endurance, vitality.
Following Maria from girlhood to womanhood, the play reveals the complex politics of female allegiance, where childhood friendships give way to cruelty, tenderness and, ultimately, an affirmation of sisterhood and solidarity.
