MArch Architecture

Dilan Torbator

Hi, I’m Dilan, an Architectural Assistant with over five years of experience in London, alongside completing a placement in Spain, Seville through the Erasmus+ programme. During this time, I have developed a broad range of skills and interests, forming a personal architectural methodology rooted in contextual analysis and a reflective, design led approach that I continue to refine both professionally and independently. My architectural experience includes contributing to residential, commercial, and mixed-use projects, where I have overseen and coordinated project details from concept through to construction. These diverse experiences have shaped my collaborative and adaptable approach to architecture, particularly in relation to historical buildings. I am committed to continuous learning and driven to create meaningful, contextually responsive design that positively impacts people.

This thesis examines the displacement and transformation of Hasankeyf, a historic town in southeastern Turkey, as an expression of the broader Kurdish struggle focusing on cultural and historical preservation. While Kurdish identity has historically been suppressed through linguistic and political marginalisation, this study argues that the destruction of Hasankeyf represents a rupture in cultural memory, through complete spatial displacement, extending beyond language to the built environment. Hasankeyf, was submerged in 2019 following the construction of the Ilısu Dam, prompting efforts to save the selected monuments while leaving the rest underwater.

The MArch Architecture is a two-year full-time or three-year part-time programme offering exemption from ARB/RIBA Part 2. It combines rigorous professional training with creative and speculative design exploration. In the first year, students join a themed design unit to undertake a creative building design project combined with a technical and professional report. In the second year, students pursue a comprehensive speculative architectural design project, and an in-depth theoretical thesis tailored to their personal interest. The programme fosters independent thinking, innovation, theoretical and technical excellence, preparing graduates for advanced architectural practice and ongoing professional development in a dynamic global context.
