The Architectural Thesis allows MArch students to develop a tailored piece of research that critically informs the ambitions of their final design project. Students identify, investigate and communicate a specific topic, demonstrating skills in evidence-based research and undertaking innovative practice research.
The thesis can take many forms depending on the interests of the individual student and chosen methodology. The outcomes include written historical, theoretical or technological essays, ethnographic analysis, work developed through programming or 3D scanning, experimental and creative writing practices, interactive media, material investigations, full size installations, and performance-based research. The list is non exhaustive, and each student works with their Thesis supervisor to develop the exact content and structure of the final output.
The aim of the Thesis is to develop a rigorous knowledge base, and nurture critical engagement with the relevant issues at the forefront of architectural practice. It encourages highly creative, critical, inventive and innovative forms of research.

The MArch Architecture is a two-year full-time or three-year part-time programme offering exemption from ARB/RIBA Part 2. It combines rigorous professional training with creative and speculative design exploration. In the first year, students join a themed design unit to undertake a creative building design project combined with a technical and professional report. In the second year, students pursue a comprehensive speculative architectural design project, and an in-depth theoretical thesis tailored to their personal interest. The programme fosters independent thinking, innovation, theoretical and technical excellence, preparing graduates for advanced architectural practice and ongoing professional development in a dynamic global context.
