As part of an immersive module exploring experimental sound and collaborative composition, students were tasked with devising a ten-minute group performance responding to the theme of Feedback. This brief challenged them to apply and interpret a range of creative and technical concepts covered throughout the term, encouraging both innovation and cohesion.
The resulting performance was a striking example of collaborative artistry and narrative clarity. With a strong sense of movement and intention, the piece unfolded with confidence and unity—more akin to a tightly rehearsed ensemble than an experimental group. A band-like aesthetic emerged not just sonically, but visually, as six performers coalesced around a carefully considered staging: four manipulating a central mixer setup, while the other two shaped texture and rhythm through a Digitakt and a processed ukulele.
This orchestration wasn’t just effective; it was visually engaging, suggesting potential for crossover into formats like music video or live-streamed performance. The coordination among the four mixer performers demonstrated thoughtful division of labour and sonic control, while the distorted ukulele in the final section stood out as a bold, evocative gesture that lingered with audiences and assessors alike.
Projects like this showcase our commitment to fostering industry-ready creatives—artists who can navigate collaborative environments, craft compelling audio-visual experiences, and push sonic boundaries with intention and skill.
