As part of our immersive performance-led and electronic music module exploring experimental sound practices, students were tasked with devising a ten-minute group performance in response to the theme of Feedback—interpreted through sonic texture, structure, and interpersonal dynamics. The brief encouraged students to integrate concepts explored across the term, including improvisation, live electronics, and experimental composition, while working as a collaborative ensemble.
This performance opened with a palpable, nervy energy that immediately drew the audience into its evolving atmosphere. A strong sense of intent was evident from the outset, laying the groundwork for a narrative that unfolded through a balance of structure and spontaneity. Notably, the use of flute and violin added a haunting, almost cinematic quality—its restraint and timbre creating space and tension that elevated the overall texture of the piece.
The group embraced a progressive and imaginative approach, blending improvisation with a clear framework to create a performance that was both exploratory and compelling. There was a real sense of creative risk-taking and responsiveness—qualities that are key in today’s live and studio-based sound practices. From the integration of the Bastl Microgranny granular sampler to the distinctive tonal palette developed across the group, the piece demonstrated a willingness to experiment and push sonic boundaries.
This project highlights the kind of ambitious, collaborative work that defines our student experience—where artistic intent, technical curiosity, and live performance come together to produce original, forward-thinking sound art. It’s a strong example of how our students are developing the skills, creativity, and confidence needed to contribute meaningfully to the future of music and sound.
